Saving an 11-run lead

Posted by gilbert on April 5th, 2008

Salomon Torres earned a save for the Brewers today in a game that ended 13-4.

It was 13-2 when he came in — he actually allowed two runs in three innings, not a good outing. But because he pitched the final three innings of the game and came in with a lead (and held it), Torres gets a save. Gotta love the save rule.

It’s always bugged me that people value saves as a credible statistic. There’s so much wrong with the stat, like the situation I described above, and that the pitchers who have the most saves aren’t necessarily the best relievers in the league, but the ones who had the most save chances.

Torres didn’t save the game today. He just ate up the last few innings of a blowout. Big difference.

Why I love April

Posted by gilbert on April 4th, 2008

The early-season standings ultimately don’t mean very much. But I love looking at them anyway. Here’s why:

AL Central

1. Kansas City 3-0

NL East

1. Washington 3-1

Those are two franchises who aren’t expected to compete at all this season, and haven’t been relevant in a long time. But for a few days at least, Royals and Nationals fans can celebrate.

I’m so glad baseball’s back.

Hello BM!

I’m the guy who runs Obscure Sports Quarterly, but I’ll be blogging here from time to time as well.

As you’ll soon notice, I’m an Angels fan, but do follow the whole league as well — how did anyone follow baseball before the Internet?
